Q. HOW LONG IS AN ACUPUNCTURE SESSION AND WHAT DOES IN INVOLVE?

A. The initial Acupuncture session takes approximately 60-75 minutes. This gives the practitioner time to conduct an interview, review the Pulse and Tongue, and formulate the treatment plan.

The acupuncture points are then selected and inserted with fine needles. Approximately 12-20 needles are used in an average treatment but sometimes more or less. Therapeutic Balms or liniments may be applied, as well as infrared heat. Cupping may also be used. A follow up treatment usually takes about 45-55 minutes, with the needles kept in place for about 30-40 minutes.

Q. DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

A. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, and as such they trigger very little pain. Once the needle is in position, the practitioner will gently stimulate it to activate the acupuncture point. At this time you may feel a mild dull ache or heavy or numb feeling. This is normal and indicates the treatment is working. If you are a first timer, or a nervous patient, we are very experienced in managing your anxiety and use a very gentle technique. The vast majority of clients finish their treatment feeling very comfortable and relaxed, and looking forward to their next visit.

Q. ARE THERE ANY ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS FROM ACUPUNCTURE?

A. Side effects from Acupuncture are mild and uncommon, but some patients may experience:

  • Transient soreness at site of needling.
  • Slight bruising.
  • Sleepiness, drowsiness after treatment.
  • Flare up of their condition for 12-24 hours after which symptoms usually settle and the overall condition improves (more common with painful conditions).
  • If the treatment involves suction cupping, then a dark red or purplish mark may remain on the skin for around 3-7 days, but it is painless.

Q. WILL THE HERBS OR SUPPLEMENTS AFFECT MY MEDICATION?

A. The vast majority of herbs and supplements are safe to use with most medicines, but there are some exceptions. Please advise your practitioner if you are on any medication or supplements and we can advise on you whether herbal medicine is suitable for you or not.

Q. HOW MANY ACUPUNCTURE SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

A. The answer to this varies significantly according to the individual. Usually somewhere between 2 and 12 sessions, with an average of about 6. If you would like more information about this please call the clinic.
