Today I’d like to talk about some of the many reasons why getting a regular massage is an excellent idea for most.
It often doesn’t take too much convincing for people to realise this but there are still some that think massage is simply “pampering” yourself or should be just reserved for a “treat”.
My aim is to help you understand that it can be so much more than that.
Reason no. 1
Regular Massage can reduce pain and injuries
More often than not, when we experience pain in our body it is the result of some kind of physical or emotional stress that has taken it’s toll over time. Unless of course you have been in an accident such as a car crash or fall which has involved direct trauma to your body. Then pain is the result.
Getting massages can help to avoid this stress from accumulating and resulting in pain.
For example, that headache you’ve got has probably built up over weeks or months of sitting in front of your computer at work. The tension in your neck and shoulders are so tight now that the pain in referring to your temples or brow area.
Or maybe your lower back aches at the end of the day and feels stiff? You have tried to twist and stretch it out which helps to some degree but this has become a normal pattern where is goes from feeling tight to sore and has been the case for some time now.
Ignoring these symptoms of tension and stiffness will usually guarantee an injury is in your future.
Being PRO-ACTIVE means that you tend to, and address the imbalances and areas that need it before your body can’t compensate any more and this starts to cause pain and dysfunction in your movement.
More often than not we know what areas need some extra care or what needs to be addressed as we often have a particular area of our body that is affected by the repetitive nature of our jobs or sports/activity.
Reason no.2
Your nervous system needs a time out!
When was the last time you had an hour to yourself to just stop and be?
Most people don’t realise how busy and hectic there life has become. I mentioned relaxation being a benefit earlier and that a lot of people associate activities that involve relaxation to be a luxury.
Society really need to change their attitude towards this.
Operating in top gear, 100% of the time is detrimental to our wellbeing and can affect our energy levels, sleep quality, weaken the immune system and begins a downward spiral of health issues affecting out digestion, hormones and mental health.
When we are in a relaxed state it gives our body the opportunity to calm our nervous system which in turn makes it possible for our bodies heal and allow normal bodily functions to commence.
We need to service our body and mind just like you would service your car regularly to make sure it doesn’t break down!
Reason no.3
This sounds really cliché but…. To be the best version of you.
Getting a regular massage has become popular as a means of maintaining optimal health and feeling good as much and as often as possible.
There will always be times or situations where you might become injured or become sick. You are human after all, but getting regular massages since it is a therapy that is aimed to make you more self aware of your body, can help you to reduce the occurrences and severity of these incidences.
In summary, getting regular massage therapy can be used to optimise your performance mentally at work, physically as an athlete and help you to feel happier and more engaged in your every day interactions with family and friends.
So what does getting a “regular” massage mean?
A regular massage just means to schedule a visit routinely, so you are coming in as a means of PREVENTION which can help stop major issues from arising.
What’s common for most people is setting up appointments anywhere from fortnightly to coming once every 6 weeks but the average time frame that seems to work for most people is having a treatment monthly.
When starting off sometimes people might need to try and space sessions out at different intervals to find the magic number of weeks or months between visits until they find that sweet spot.
Usually after 2 or 3 visits, you and your therapists will be able to work out how much time between sessions will work best for you depending on how you are feeling and how your body is responding to the massage at the time.
